This free integers worksheet generator creates printable practice sheets for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers, with an answer key on a separate page. It runs in your web browser with no sign-up, and the problems are made on your own device. Whether you need a practice sheet for homework or an activity sheet for class, you choose the problem types, difficulty and number of problems, then print the sheet or save it as a PDF.

Integers are the whole numbers and their negatives, such as −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2 and 3. Each sheet uses numbers that suit the level you pick, so you can start with small values and move up to larger ones. Tick only the multiply type for an integer multiplication worksheet. Everything you make here is free to use in class or in products you sell, such as Teachers Pay Teachers resources, Etsy printables or KDP workbooks.

How to use the Integers Worksheet Generator

  1. Tick one or more boxes under Problem types. Adding integers and Subtracting integers are ticked when the page opens. You can also choose Multiplying integers, Dividing integers, Integer operations (order of operations) and Absolute value expressions.
  2. Pick a level under Difficulty: Easy, Medium or Hard.
  3. Choose how many problems you want under Number of problems, from 6 to 30.
  4. Open More options to set the Columns (Automatic, 1, 2 or 3), the Paper size (Letter 8.5 × 11 in or A4 210 × 297 mm), a Worksheet title, and a Name and date line if you want one. The Answer key on a separate page box is on by default.
  5. Check the preview on the right, which shows the sheet as it will print. Press Show answers to see each answer under its problem on screen, then press it again to hide them.
  6. Press Print / Save as PDF. In the browser’s print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file instead of paper.

Press New worksheet for a fresh random set of problems with the same settings. This is useful for printing several versions for different rows of desks. Copy link copies a link that opens exactly the same worksheet again. Your settings are remembered in this browser for your next visit, unless you open a shared link, which uses that link’s settings. The tool also works on phones and tablets, but printing needs a printer or the Save as PDF option.

Integer addition rules

To add integers, first compare the signs. If both numbers have the same sign, add their absolute values and keep that sign. If the signs are different, subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger one, then keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

The absolute value of a number, written |n|, is its distance from 0, so it is never negative. For example, |−13| = 13. Using this idea helps you compare sizes when the signs differ. For −4 + (−6), both signs are negative, so add 4 and 6 to get 10 and keep the negative sign: −10. For −17 + 19, the signs differ. The difference between 19 and 17 is 2, and 19 is the larger absolute value and is positive, so the answer is 2.

Parentheses are printed around negative numbers that follow an operation sign, as in 3 + (−5). The parentheses show that the negative sign belongs to the number, not to the operation. Here, 3 + (−5) has the answer −2, because 5 is larger than 3 and negative.

Subtraction rules for integers

To subtract an integer, add its opposite. In symbols, a − b = a + (−b). Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive one: a − (−b) = a + b.

Work through −5 − (−9) step by step. Change the subtraction of −9 into the addition of 9, which gives −5 + 9. Since 9 is larger than 5, the answer is positive: 4. For 19 − 4, there is no negative number to change, so you simply subtract the smaller number from the larger, and the answer is 15.

Multiplying and dividing follow a separate sign rule. When two integers have the same sign, the result is positive. When the signs are different, the result is negative. For example, 24 × (−11) = −264, and −120 ÷ (−10) = 12. Check the sign of your answer first, then work out the size of the number.

Absolute value problems combine these rules: work out each absolute value first, then add or subtract, so |−13| + |14| − |15| = 13 + 14 − 15 = 12.

Frequently asked questions

Is the integer rules worksheet PDF free to make?

Yes. The generator is free and needs no sign-up. Choose the problem types and settings, then press Print / Save as PDF and select Save as PDF in the print dialog.

How do I print an integers worksheet with answers?

Leave the Answer key on a separate page box ticked, which is the default. When you print, the answer key starts on a new page after the worksheet and lists every problem number with its answer.

Can I make a different set of problems with the same settings?

Yes. Press New worksheet to get a fresh random set of problems with the same settings. Each set is different, so you can print several versions or practise again with new numbers.

Yes. Press Copy link to copy a link that opens exactly the same worksheet. The problem set is stored in the link as a number, so anyone who opens it sees the same problems.

Which problem type should I choose for an adding and subtracting integers worksheet?

Tick both Adding integers and Subtracting integers, which are ticked when the page opens. The problems are shared evenly between the two types and grouped under their own instructions, with the numbering running from 1 to N across the sheet.

Does the integers worksheet work on a phone?

Yes. The tool works on phones and tablets as well as computers. Printing needs a printer, or you can use Save as PDF to create a file.

Can I sell these integers worksheets as a printable on Etsy or TpT?

Yes. You can sell what you make here, for example as a Teachers Pay Teachers resource, an Etsy download or pages in a KDP book. It is royalty-free and needs no credit line. The only limit is that you may not mirror or resell the site or its generators as a competing service.
