This free percent worksheet generator makes printable percent practice sheets in your web browser, with no sign-up needed. Nothing is uploaded, because the problems are made on your own device. You choose the problem types, the difficulty and the number of problems, then print the sheet or save it as a PDF. The types cover percent of a number, finding the percent, finding the whole, fractions, decimals and percents, percent increase and decrease, percent word problems, and simple interest. An answer key is included on a separate page by default, and every answer is exact: money to the cent, fractions in simplest form. For an increase and decrease percentage worksheet, tick the percent change and increase/decrease types together. Everything you make here is free to use in class or in products you sell, such as Teachers Pay Teachers resources, Etsy printables or KDP workbooks.

How to use the percent worksheet generator

  1. Under Problem types, tick one or more boxes. Three are ticked when the page opens: Percent of a number, Finding the percent (what percent is…), and Finding the whole (percent of what number).
  2. Under Difficulty, choose Easy, Medium or Hard.
  3. Under Number of problems, choose 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 24 or 30.
  4. Open More options to set the columns (Automatic, 1, 2 or 3), the paper size (Letter or A4), a worksheet title, and the name and date line. Leave Answer key on a separate page ticked to print the key.
  5. Check the preview on the right. It shows the sheet as it will print.
  6. Click Show answers to see the answers on screen. Click it again to hide them.
  7. Click Print / Save as PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF to make a PDF file.

When several problem types are ticked, the problems are shared evenly between them and grouped by type, each group with its own one-line instruction. Click New worksheet for a fresh set with the same settings. Copy link saves the exact worksheet so it opens again later. Your settings are remembered in this browser, and the tool works on phones and tablets as well as computers.

How do you find the percent of a number?

To find the percent of a number, change the percent to a decimal and multiply. Percent means “per hundred”, so 35% = 35/100 = 0.35, and 35% of 80 = 0.35 × 80 = 28. To change a percent to a decimal, divide by 100, which moves the decimal point two places left. To change a decimal to a percent, multiply by 100. To change a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator, so 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%.

The three percent problem types all come from one relationship, written in three forms:

  • part = percent × whole
  • percent = part ÷ whole × 100
  • whole = part ÷ percent (as a decimal)

For example, 30 is 50% of what number? Change 50% to 0.5, then divide 30 by 0.5 to get 60. Pick the form that matches the unknown: the part, the percent or the whole.

How do you calculate percent increase and decrease?

To calculate percent change, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100: (new − original) ÷ original × 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease. Going from 80 to 100 gives (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%, an increase.

To increase a number by a percent, multiply it by (1 + p/100). To decrease it, multiply by (1 − p/100). Decreasing 30 by 10% gives 30 × 0.9 = 27. Increasing 112 by 62.5% gives 112 × 1.625 = 182.

Money word problems about discounts, sales tax, tips, commission and markup use these same multipliers, and their answers are written to the cent. Simple interest uses I = P × r × t, where t is in years. For months, divide by 12, so 8 months is 8 ÷ 12 years.

How do you solve word problems using percentages?

Find the base amount, change the percent to a decimal and decide whether the question asks for the amount of the change or the new total. A $220 bicycle at 20% off saves 0.20 × 220 = $44.00; the sale price would be $176.00. On Hard sheets some problems take two steps: a $150 coat is 20% off, so it costs $120, and then 12.5% sales tax is added to the sale price, giving 120 × 1.125 = $135.00.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an answer key?

Yes. By default, the answer key is printed on a separate page after the worksheet. It lists every problem number with its answer. To check answers on screen first, use Show answers.

Does the generator include word problems using percentages?

Yes. Tick Percent word problems (discount, tax, tip, commission, markup) and/or Simple interest. Money answers include a dollar sign and two decimal places, such as $28.60 for a 20% tip on a $143 bill.

What do the Hard problems include?

Hard problems include percents above 100%, such as 301 is what percent of 172? (175%). They also use decimal results, such as 18% of 610 = 109.8.

What is the difference between Finding the percent and Finding the whole?

Finding the percent asks for the percent, given the part and the whole. Finding the whole asks for the whole, given the part and the percent. For example, 16 is what percent of 40? is 40%, while 30 is 50% of what number? is 60.

Can the generator make fractions, decimals and percents practice?

Yes. Tick Fractions, decimals and percents. Problems ask you to rewrite a number as a decimal, a fraction in simplest form, or a percent, such as 75% = 3/4 = 0.75.

Can I make percent worksheets on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The generator works on phones and tablets as well as computers, and the sheet is made on the device without uploading anything. Printing needs a printer or the Save as PDF option in the print dialog.

Are these percent worksheets OK for Teachers Pay Teachers and Etsy?

Yes. Everything you make here is royalty-free for personal, classroom and commercial use, including Teachers Pay Teachers, Etsy printables, KDP workbooks and print-on-demand products. No credit is required. The only thing you may not do is copy the generator or the site itself to run a competing service. See the terms.
