This free slope practice worksheet generator makes printable slope problems in your web browser. Choose the problem types you need, such as slope from two points, slope from a graph, or slope-intercept form, and the sheet is ready in seconds. No sign-up is needed, and nothing is uploaded, because the problems are made on your device.

It covers the usual slope practice: finding the slope from two points or on a graph, reading the slope from an equation, and writing equations in slope-intercept form. Each sheet can include an answer key. Problems come at Easy, Medium and Hard levels. The graph type works as an identifying slope from a graph worksheet: each problem shows a line on a grid. Everything you make is free for commercial use, such as on Teachers Pay Teachers.

How to use the slope worksheet generator

  1. Tick one or more problem types under Problem types. If you tick several, the problems are shared evenly between them and grouped by type, each group with its own instruction.
  2. Choose a level under Difficulty: Easy, Medium or Hard.
  3. Pick how many problems you want under Number of problems, from 6 up to 30.
  4. Open More options to set the Columns (Automatic, 1, 2 or 3), the Paper size (Letter or A4), a Worksheet title, and whether to add a Name and date line. Leave Answer key on a separate page ticked if you want a key.
  5. Check the preview on the right. It shows the sheet as it will print.
  6. Click Show answers to see the answers on screen. Press it again to hide them.
  7. Click New worksheet for a fresh random set with the same settings.
  8. Click Print / Save as PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file instead of paper.

Copy link copies a link that opens the same worksheet again, because the problem set is stored in the link as a number. Your settings are remembered in this browser for your next visit, but a shared link uses the settings stored in that link. The tool also works on phones and tablets.

How do you find the slope from two points

To find the slope from two points, divide the change in y by the change in x. For points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), the slope is m = (y2 − y1) / (x2 − x1), which is rise over run. Subtract the y-values, subtract the x-values in the same order, and divide.

For example, take (−5, −8) and (5, 0). The rise is 0 − (−8) = 8, and the run is 5 − (−5) = 10. So m = 8/10 = 4/5. Fraction slopes are written in lowest terms, so 6/9 becomes 2/3.

The sign tells you the direction of the line. A line going up to the right has a positive slope, and a line going down to the right has a negative slope. A horizontal line has a slope of 0.

What is slope-intercept form

Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b. Here m is the slope, and b is the y-intercept, the point where the line crosses the y-axis. In y = 4x + 2, the slope is 4 and the line crosses the y-axis at (0, 2).

To write an equation from two points, first find m with the formula above. Then find b with b = y1 − m·x1, using either point. For (0, 2) and (2, 10), m = (10 − 2) / (2 − 0) = 4, and b = 2 − 4·0 = 2, so y = 4x + 2.

The same method works from a slope and one point. Use the given slope as m, then solve for b with the point. You can also start from point-slope form, y − y1 = m(x − x1), and rearrange it into y = mx + b. Answers on this tool are given in slope-intercept form with whole-number intercepts.

How do you find the slope from an equation?

If the equation is in the form y = mx + b, the slope is the number in front of x: y = 3x + 2 has slope 3. If it is in standard form Ax + By = C, solve for y or use slope = −A/B: 8x + 6y = 8 gives −8/6 = −4/3.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find slope from a graph?

Pick two points where the line crosses grid corners. Count how far the line rises and how far it runs between them, then divide the rise by the run. A line going up to the right gives a positive answer, and a line going down to the right gives a negative one.

What is an undefined slope?

An undefined slope belongs to a vertical line. Its run is 0, and you cannot divide by zero, so the slope does not exist as a number. Zero and undefined slopes appear now and then on Medium and Hard sheets.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The answer key is on a separate page by default, and you can turn it off under More options. When you print, the key starts on a new page after the worksheet, lists every problem number with its answer, and for the graph problems it draws the rise and run on the line.

Can I use this as a slope intercept equation worksheet?

Yes. Tick Slope-intercept form from two points or Equation from a slope and a point. Each answer is written as y = mx + b, such as y = 4x + 2.

What do the Hard problems ask for?

Hard two-point problems often have fraction slopes, such as 4/5. Hard Slope from an equation problems use the form Ax + By = C, where the slope is −A/B. For example, in 8x + 6y = 8 the slope is −4/3.

Can I put these slope worksheets in a workbook or a KDP book?

Yes. The worksheets and answer keys you generate are free for personal, classroom and commercial use, such as Teachers Pay Teachers products, Etsy listings or a printed workbook. You do not need to credit this site. You may not copy the generator itself and offer it as your own tool.
